The “Million Mile” Maintenance Plan
Tacomas last forever, but only if you take care of them. Here is the enthusiast schedule (more aggressive than the manual).
Every 5,000 Miles
- Engine Oil & Filter: 0W-20 Synthetic.
- Tire Rotation: Critical for M/T tires to prevent cupping.
- Grease: Check driveline zerks (if equipped) and aftermarket UCA bushings.
Every 30,000 Miles (The Big One)
- Spark Plugs: (Wait, Toyota says 60k? Yes, but copper plugs wear. Actually, the 3.5L uses iridiums good for 60k-100k. Ideally check them at 60k).
- Differential Fluid: Front and Rear Diffs (75W-85 GL-5).
- Transfer Case: 75W LF.
- Air Filters: Engine and Cabin.
Every 60,000 Miles
- Transmission Fluid: Drain and Fill (WS Fluid). Do not flush.
- Serpentine Belt: Inspect for cracks.
Every 100,000 Miles
- Coolant: Drain and fill (Super Long Life Pink).
- Water Pump: Inspect for weeping.
Pro Tip: If you water cross, change diff fluid immediately. Water turns oil into a milkshake that destroys gears.
? Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change oil in my Tacoma?
Toyota says 10,000 miles. Mechanics say **5,000 miles**. If you tow, off-road, or idle a lot, stick to 5,000 miles to prevent sludge and VVT issues.
When should I change differential fluid?
Every 30,000 miles if you tow or off-road frequently. Every 60,000 miles for highway trucks. Don't forget the Transfer Case!
Does the Tacoma have a timing belt or chain?
The 3.5L V6 (2GR-FKS) uses a **Timing Chain**, which generally lasts the life of the engine. No expensive 100k mile belt service needed.
Where are the grease zerks on a 3rd Gen Tacoma?
Surprise! Most 3rd Gen driveshafts are sealed (no zerks). However, some early models or aftermarket U-joints may have them. Always check.
