Maximum Towing Capacity Explained
Marketing brochures love to shout “6,800 LBS TOWING!” But that number is a simplified maximum.
The Real Limit: Payload (GVWR)
Here is where everyone gets in trouble. Payload is the amount of weight the truck can carry on itself (passengers, fuel, cargo in bed, + Trailer Tongue Weight).
- Average Tacoma Payload: ~1,000 - 1,200 lbs.
- Math:
- You (200 lbs) + Passenger (150 lbs) + Gear (100 lbs) = 450 lbs used.
- Remaining Payload: 650 lbs.
- Max Tongue Weight Allowed: 650 lbs.
- Since tongue weight is usually 10-15% of trailer weight, your max trailer is actually around 4,500 - 5,000 lbs, not 6,800.
Essential Upgrades for Towing
- Trailer Brake Controller: The Tacomas do NOT come with a built-in brake controller (until very recently). You must install one (like the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty) to activate your trailer’s electric brakes.
- Towing Mirrors: The stock mirrors are narrow. Clip-on extensions are mandatory for seeing past a wide camper.
- Transmission Cooler: If you have the Tow Package, you have a small cooler. Monitor transmission temps (using an OBDII scanner) if towing uphill.
Conclusion
Can it tow? Yes. Is it a diesel ¾ ton? No. Keep your trailer under 4,500 lbs dry weight for a comfortable towing experience.
